Stilling:

Research Scientist – Applied Statistics

Deadline 10.08.2018

About the position:

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has an opening for a permanent position as research scientists in the cross-disciplinary research group on Fishery Dynamics. The principal areas of research will include statistical analysis of fisheries and ecological data, statistical survey sampling methods, including survey design and estimation methods, and the development of mathematical/statistical tools for stock assessment and the quantification of uncertainty.

Institute of Marine Research

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is the biggest research institute of its kind in Europe, with over 1,000 employeesand a wide range of research facilities and laboratories of high international standard. Our main activities are research, advisory work and monitoring. The Institute owns and operates six research vessels.

Our main offices are in Bergen, and we have a department in Tromsø and research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen. In January 2018, the IMR was merged with NIFES – The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research. The new institute will be a leading supplier of knowledge relating to the sustainable management of the resources in our marine ecosystems and the whole food chain from the sea to the table.

The successful candidates will work in multidisciplinary projects that require the use of a variety of statistical and mathematical methods to study the distribution, abundance and dynamics of exploited fish species, and quantify catch composition and impact of fishing on marine ecosystems. The group works within an informal, interactive research atmosphere that provides opportunity for individual growth and advancement. Extensive research collaboration with national and international institutions is expected and encouraged.

Qualifications:

The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent degree in statistics, applied mathematics, computational biology, quantitative fisheries ecology or a related field awarded within the past 5 years. Documented experience in statistical analysis of complex survey data using R in the fields of fisheries science or ecology is required. Experience in ecological predictive modeling and in the use of mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques to study biological systems are desirable. Experience with statistical assessment modeling in fisheries, analysis and modeling of cluster-correlated data from complex sampling surveys, and programming experience in AD Model Builder/Template Model Builder in R will be valued. Experience with hierarchical modeling, Bayesian modeling, and the use of nonlinear state-space models for analyzing data from ecological systems is desirable.

Good oral and written communication skills in English are required and a working knowledge of the Norwegian language will be advantageous. The ability to work on multiple projects in a multi-disciplinary team setting is necessary, and a strong publication record is desirable. Experience from research in collaboration with the Fishing Industry and participation in work through the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) will be valued.

We offer:

The salary will be negotiable within the Norwegian Public Service pay scale for research scientist 1109 and commensurate with experience. We offer a challenging and creative work environment, flexible working hours, a pension scheme through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Funds, and other welfare benefits (See http://www.spk.no/no/English for more information)

Additional information:

IMR is an “Including Working Life Enterprise” concerned with diversity and therefore encourages all qualified candidates to apply. Please note that information about applicants may be made public even if an applicant has requested to be exempted from the list of applicants.

Applicants will be notified about this in advance.

Please apply electronically using the link on this page, attaching a short letter of motivation, the names and contact details of at least two references, your CV with a list of publications, transcripts or other documentation to support your educational claims in statistics/quantitative sciences, and a selection of your most relevant publications in pdf.
